Our history and tradition

A brief history of The Breadwinner bakery

The Breadwinner bakery Edinburgh opened in Bruntsfield Place on the 6th October 1973. The finest and first open plan bakery in Edinburgh, we wanted to have nothing hidden from you, our customer. Almost four decades later we are still committed to customer service and providing excellent products using traditional craftsman techniques and high-quality ingredients.

Wholesome, chemical free bread

Baking and bread making has changed down the centuries, but World War Two had a significant impact on the quality of baking in the UK. Bakery schools closed and traditional bakery machinery became obsolete. After the war, in the absence of skilled bakers, new methods were developed to satisfy the nation’s desire for bread. These methods included adding chemicals to dough, pre-mixes and specialised machinery, which, unexpectedly, dealt another deadly blow to the true art and craft of baking. The new chemical-methods became industry standard and training in the old methods was considered unnecessary and financially unsound.

People have become increasingly dissatisfied with tasteless, uniform bread. Growing numbers are beginning to appreciate the taste and texture of good old-fashioned, natural bread!  Since we opened we have been committed to baking wholesome bread using traditional craft methods.  We have also created an area of our site devoted to helping people bake quality breads in the homes.

Our expanding product range

The Breadwinner supplies wholesale bakery products to restaurants, bistros and cafés throughout Edinburgh and beyond. Our product range has changed and expanded over the years. In 2000 we launched a new and exciting food into the food service industry: Stromboli – which now erupts all over Scotland and beyond. Stromboli is a registered trademark and produced exclusively by The Breadwinner in our craft bakery. We have also added a wide and unique range of cakes to our product list.

Each August, we actively support venues in Edinburgh during the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

We are excited that growing numbers of people are discovering the great taste of well-crafted breads. We remain committed to providing wholesome breads, cakes and pastries, using traditional and simple methods.
